ABB starts two year project

19 October 2001

ABB has started work on a two year project to construct an 400 kV indoor substation for National Grid at the City Road canal basin in Islington, North London. The new substation is part of a programme by London Electricity to reinforce the power grid serving the London Area. The project will utilise gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) so as to enable to project to be housed inside a new brick building designed to minimise aesthetic damage to the area. It will comprise four GIS switchbays together with a 240 MVA transformer and substation protection and control equipment. ABB is responsible for engineering design and civil works for the project as well as installation and commissioning of the switchgear and ancillary equipment. Commissioning of the project is due in early 2003, with hand-over to National Grid scheduled for July 2003.
