Compact 440 kW diesel units

6 May 2002

The new DFE series of integrated gensets from Cummins is aimed at the 500 kVA market but is packaged using the compact 15 litre QSX15 diesel, a derivative of the proven Signature 600 automotive engine. The DFE offers the same output as the 19 litre S600 but with improved power density and emissions controls to meet TA Luft as well as noise emissions up to new EU noise standards. It is available with prime power ratings of 320 kW, 400 kVA at 50 Hz and 440 kW, 550 kVA at 60 Hz, and features full electronic control allowing fuel input to be customised to suit specific applications, for example it can be programmed to maximise power output, or alternatively fuel economy. The PowerCommand-2 control unit offers fast digital parallelling, utility grade steady state power stability, battery condition monitoring and AmpSentry protection, a feature that protects the alternator and aids downstream circuit breaker discrimination. It also includes the Smartstart fuel system, designed to eliminate black smoke at start up by monitoring ambient conditions and metering the optimum amount of fuel.

The standard enclosure meets EU noise directive 200/14/EC coming into force this year, while a supersilenced version provides noise reduction to 75 dBA at 1 m. Other options in the modular design include an electronic security system and an enclosure-mounted breaker box.
