Malaysian twin-set

20 August 2001

Newly formed genset rentals company, Cummins Power Rent, supplied two generating sets to ensure continuity of production at a Malaysian electronics factory, which was undergoing a mains supply upgrade.

The temporary gensets, rated at 1000 kVA and 500 kVA, were needed to power essential production equipment when disc drive maker Pre-Circuit upgraded the supply to its Johore Bahru factory from 2 MW, 2000 A, to 2.5 MW, 3000 A. The upgrade is needed to help the plant meet its ever more demanding production schedules. Pre-Circuit is a 24/7 operation. Critical production equipment includes three furnaces, which take eight hours to reheat following a mains interruption or failure lasting two hours or more.

Three days were needed to install a new, 3000 A, switchboard, transformer and circuit breakers.

The 500 kVA set supplied power for critical production equipment, while the 1000 kVA set, powered by a Cummins KTA38G5 diesel, supplied the rest of the loads, with Pre-Circuit’s own 800 kVA standby set ready to operate in the event of a set failure.

The rental sets are housed in acoustic enclosures, meeting 85 dB(A) at 1m. The 1000 kVA rental set has heavy duty filters and built-in fuel tanks for extended operation.
