ABB has won a slew of contracts to supply transmission and distribution equipment in the Americas.

In the USA the company has been awarded a contract by the US Army Corps of Engineers to replace generator circuit breakers at 14 hydropower plants in the US states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The contract, worth between $25 million and $50 million, will run for five years. ABB will design, build, install, test and commission the new units, rated at 100 kA and 120 kA, which will replace existing air blast circuit breakers.

• In Mexico, ABB is to build a 242 km high voltage power transmission system under a contract worth $115 million with Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), the Mexican state utility. The transmission line will strengthen the connection between the Manuel Moreno hydropower plant and the national grid. working with a Mexico-based consortium partner, Techint. ABB will build the overhead transmission line and a new substation on a schedule to start operations at the end of 2003. The line is part of a $ 269 million CFE plan to develop the electrical infrastructure in Mexico. The plan involves construction of around 600 km of 400 kV overhead transmission line.

• In Venezuela. the company has won three contracts from CVG Electrificacion del Caroni, worth a total of $41 million, to provide systems to help extend and increase the country's power supply by more than 10 per cent. Under the terms of the deals, ABB will design and built a 400 kV substation and four related 400 kV transmission lines that will connect the 2160 MW Caruachi hydropower station with the national transmission network. The contract calls for the supply of high voltage equipment, associated switchyard equipment and computerised protection and control systems. The project is scheduled for completion in 2004. The Caruachi plant itself, when completed in 2006, will provide around 12 000 GWh annually, increasing output in Venezuela by 11 per cent.
