Plans progress for NPP construction in Uzbekistan

Rosatom and Uzbekistan’s nuclear utility Uzatom are working on a contract for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country. Rosatom is also ready to offer Uzbekistan options for low-power NPPs. “Rosatom and the Uzatom agency are working on a draft general contract for the construction of nuclear power plants; this is an extensive and multifunctional work”, Russian deputy prime minister and head of the Ministry of Industry & Trade Denis Manturov said on the sidelines of the international exhibition, ‘Innoprom – Central Asia.’ At the same time, he said, Rosatom is ready to offer additional proposals to Uzbekistan, including for low-power nuclear power plants.

On 19 April members of the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA) organisation adopted the UNEZA roadmap to 2030, which targets a total increase of renewable energy capacity within their portfolios to 749 GW by 2030, an increase of 2.5 times relative to 2023. UNEZA was established at COP28, with the adoption of the UAE Declaration of Action. Alliance members’ joint renewables ambition was announced, alongside a grid infrastructure action plan.

On 20 April the 2024 World Congress on Internal Combustion Engines got under way in Tianjin, China. The congress is aimed at showcasing the industry's latest technological advancements. At the event, Weichai Power unveiled what is believed to be the world's first diesel engine with an intrinsic thermal efficiency of 53.09%. The achievement was officially recognized by TÜV SÜD, and the China Automotive Technology & Research Centre, a professional testing body for Chinese internal combustion engines. Both organisations issued product testing reports and certificates to Weichai Power, confirming the company's new world record in the key economic index of diesel engine thermal efficiency.

RWE starts work on onshore cabling for Thor project

RWE reports that it is ready to take the next step in the construction of its 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm. From mid-April to the end of October, the onshore cable works will be carried out at and around the onshore substation south of Lemvig and the beach south of Tuskær. Ground was broken at the onshore substation in May last year, and onshore construction work is progressing according to plan, says RWE.

Wärtsilä has been awarded a major contract by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), a river authority based in Austin, that provides wholesale power to the Texas power grid.
