100 MW wind farm on-line in South Africa

23 June 2015

Eskom has added 100 MW of capacity to its grid with the commissioning of the Sere wind farm.

The 46-turbine project is Eskom's first large-scale renewable energy project and one of the largest wind energy projects in South Africa. It will help the utility to overcome electricity shortages that have been hampering its business for several months.

The Sere wind farm was built with financial support from the African Development Bank, the World Bank and the French Development Agency. It included the construction of a new substation and a 44 km-long 132 kV distribution line. Construction started in late 2013 and first synchronization took place in October 2014.
