8 GW boost for UK offshore wind

26 July 2022

Commenting on the UK government’s approval of six offshore wind projects to enter the final stage of Leasing Round 4, adding 8 GW of new capacity and powering over 7 million homes, Kat Route-Stephens, Offshore Wind Strategic Compensation Programme manager for the Offshore Wind Industry Council commented: “Today’s announcement represents a recognition by government of the fact that the offshore wind industry is working closely with a wide range of partners, including other sea users and wildlife organisations, to strengthen not only our nation’s energy security, but also the ways in which we protect the rich biodiversity in UK waters while we build out new projects.

“The Offshore Wind Industry Council is leading the way on researching and developing measures to ensure that marine life thrives alongside much-needed new renewable energy capacity.

“The 8GW moving forward in this leasing round represent more than three-quarters of our current offshore wind capacity, taking the UK a significant step closer to net zero”.

The Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) is a senior government and industry forum established in 2013 to drive the development of the offshore wind sector in the UK.
