ABB and Prysmian to supply cable for Danish wind farm

8 April 2014

ABB has won a $40 million order from Danish transmission system operator Energinet.dk to build an AC power cable system to integrate and transmit power from the 400 MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

ABB will be responsible for technical design, engineering and production of the subsea 220 kV cable system including accessories and installation. Cable manufacture will be carried out at ABB's factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, and delivered in 2016.

The 32 km long three-core polymeric insulated submarine cable with integrated fibre-optics for data communications and temperature monitoring, ABB says.

Meanwhile, Prysmian has won a $15 million contract to supply on-shore cables that will run up to 60 km from landfall to a transformer station at Endrup. The cables will be manufactured in Pikkala in Finland.

"With these two contracts we have reached yet another milestone in our work to connect Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm. By the end of the year, we expect to enter contracts for other large plant sections such as transformers and the large platform which will be installed at the offshore wind farm, where it will collect the electricity from the wind turbines", says project manager Søren Juul Larsen, Energinet.dk.

Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2015, and must be completed by the end of 2016. Energinet.dk said.
