A Brazilian transmission company is strengthening grid reliability in the northeast of the country with equipment from Swiss engineering company ABB.

Transmissora Delmiro Gouveia (TDG), which is jointly owned by Brazilian state utility Chesf and engineering concern ATP Engenharia, has placed an order with ABB for the supply of two new substations and equipment to expand a further two existing substations.

ABB will deliver one of the largest transformers ever built in Brazil for the project, providing one of the new substations with twice the transforming capacity of typical substations in the country. The company will also increase the transforming capacity of two existing substations.

The new substation will be located in Ceará state and the two extensions in Maranhão state.

“These substations will enhance transmission capacity to help meet an increasing need for electricity driven by economic growth in the country,” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business. “They will also strengthen grid reliability and improve power stability in the region.”

ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, erection and commissioning of the substations. Power transformers, high voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, instrument transformers and surge arresters, as well as medium voltage equipment are among the main products that will be supplied.

ABB will also install substation automation systems equipped with the company's latest generation of protection and control products. The project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2012.
