ABB wins Fenno-Skan 2 contract

15 May 2008

Fingrid and Svenska Kraftnät have selected ABB to deliver the new HVDC converter stations for the Fenno-Skan 2 interconnector project.

Under a contract valued at EUR110 million, ABB will supply two converter stations to be located at Rauma, Sweden and Finnböle, Finland. Design work will start in 2009 with handover scheduled for 2011.

Fenno-Skan 2 will be an 800 MW, 500 kV interconnection between Finland and Sweden. It will increase the electricity transmission capacity between the two countries by around 40 per cent and help to further integrate the Nordic electricity market.

The 270 km-long link, which will include 200 km of submarine cable, will also help to reduce differences in the price of electricity between countries in the Nordic market and will reduce transmission losses.

ABB has also recently won an order from the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to deliver valve and control system components to the Lingbao II extension project, which will expand the existing asynchronous interconnection at the Lingbao back-to-back HVDC station by an additional 750 MW.

The project will use six-inch thyristors (power semiconductors), developed jointly by ABB and the Power Electronics Research Institute (PERI) in Xian. The thyristors are rated at 4500 A, which is the highest in the world.
