ABB wins order for Chile's first Statcom

Chilean utility Transelec is planning to enhance the capacity and reliability of power supplies in the city of Santiago with a static VAr compensation (SVC) Light installation from ABB.

The Swiss technology firm has received a $25 million order from Transelec to install and commission a static compensator (STATCOM), which uses ABB’s patented SVC Light technology to stabilise voltage fluctuations in the grid. The project represents the first ever installation of STATCOM technology in Chile, according to ABB.

The equipment will be installed at the Cerro Navia substation and will enable Transelec to increase the electricity supply through its existing 500 kV transmission lines, which transfer power from the south of the country to mid-town Santiago. The project is expected to be completed by 2011.

“By stabilising voltages in the grid, SVC Light enables electricity providers to make better use of existing infrastructure,” said Per Haugland, Head of ABB’s Grid Systems business. “That reduces the need to build new installations, which can be costly and time consuming.”
