ABB wins power contract in Iraq

12 March 2012

Shell has awarded ABB a contract to build the power plant at a Basrah gas capture project in southern Iraq.

Under the $60 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Shell Gas Iraq B.V., ABB will build and commission the 50 MW power plant, which will "play a key role in supporting the development and operation of vital new infrastructure in Iraq".

The power plant will be operated by Basrah Gas Company, a joint venture firm set up by Shell, Mitsubishi Corporation and the Iraqi South Gas Company to execute the South Gas Project.

The new power plant will feed electricity into the facilities of the Basrah Gas Company and is due to start operating in the third quarter of 2013. ABB will be responsible for the overall project management, engineering, procurement, construction, supervision, commissioning and start-up services, as well as performance.

Its scope of supply for the plant includes process control systems, fire and gas, and emergency shutdown systems, power management systems, step-up and distribution transformers, medium- and low-voltage power equipment, and site utilities such as the diesel generator, flare control and compressed air system.

The South Gas Project will capture, treat and process gas being flared off at oilfields in southern Iraq, providing the country with an important domestic energy source.
