ABB has won contracts worth $45 million for the design and supply of three 400 kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substations to Swedish National Grid operator, Svenska kraftnät.
The first order is for replacement of the Sege 400 kV substation in southern Sweden, which supplies power to the city of Malmö and to the Skåne region. ABB will also supply two new 400kV substations - Djuptjärn and Högnäs - to secure power supply to the city of Kalix in northern Sweden. The Högnäs substation will also 'enable the integration of clean wind energy to the national grid in the Västerbotten region,' ABB says.
"These substations will enhance grid reliability and transmission efficiency, facilitating the supply of quality power to consumers," commented Claudio Facchin, Head of ABB's Power Systems division.
The three substations will deploy ABB's latest technologies including the combined Disconnector Circuit Breaker, which, by eliminating the need for two separate freestanding disconnectors helps to reduce the substation's footprint by 'up to 50 per cent.'
ABB said the substations are due to be commissioned in 2015.
