Abengoa to build 300 MW Pemex cogen plant

20 September 2009

Spanish engineering firm Abengoa is to build and operate a 300 MW cogeneration plant in Mexico after a consortium of Abener and Abengoa Mexico was awarded a concession by Pemex.

Under a turnkey contract, the consortium will build the $633 million plant in Tabasco state and operate it for a period of 20 years. Sales from the concession are projected by Abengoa to be $2.18 billion.

In addition to providing electricity to one of Pemex’s facilities, the cogeneration plant will generate between 550 and 800 t/h of steam. It will send excess electricity produced to other Pemex facilities via a new transmission line, helping to reinforce national utility CFE’s infrastructure in the region.

The Abengoa consortium, which also includes GE, is contracted to complete the plant within 36 months.
