The Louisiana Public Service Commission has approved plans by American Electric Power (AEP) to build one of the first ultra-supercritical power plants in the USA.
The Ohio-based utility is waiting for approval from Texas regulators and for an air permit before it goes ahead with construction of the 600 MW power plant in southwest Arkansas.
The $1.34 billion coal-fired plant will take 48 months to build and will be operated by AEP’s Arkansas subsidiary, SWEPCO. It will use low-sulphur coal and will include state-of-the-art emission control technologies, including a design that allows for the retrofit of carbon dioxide controls.
