AES acquires landfill gas project

12 May 2008

US power company AES has expanded its Climate Solutions business through the acquisition of a 25 MW landfill gas energy project in El Salvador.

The Nejapa landfill project is projected to generate an average of 400 000 Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs) per year under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme. The acquisition is part of AES’s strategy to invest in a range of projects and technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The purchase of the Nejapa Landfill Project further demonstrates AES’s global commitment to reducing greenhouse gases,” said Bill Lyons, President, AES Climate Solutions. “This transaction, one of the first acquisitions involving a Clean Development Mechanism project since the start of the Kyoto process, will help reduce emissions while providing power to the growing El Salvador market.”

AES Nejapa Gas Ltda will own and operate the gas gathering systems at the Nejapa landfill site, and will also install and operate power generation equipment to provide up to 25 MW of energy from methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 21 times greater than carbon dioxide.

AES started its Climate Solutions business in 2005 and is aiming to build a portfolio of projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 34 million tonnes a year by 2012. Its current pipeline of projects could produce up to 19 million CERs annually through renewable energy, energy efficiency initiatives and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from third party sources.
