RWE has signed a framework agreement with Siemens Gamesa in pursuit of its plan to build onshore wind farms in Europe, with a combined capacity of 1000 MW using Siemens Gamesa turbines, by 2027.
Katja Wünschel, CEO Onshore Wind and Solar Europe & Australia, RWE Renewables, aid: “Europe needs more wind power. And fast. With this contract, RWE has secured fixed delivery dates and a structured price settlement for a gigawatt volume. This means the supply chain for major large-scale components of new onshore wind farms in Europe is already in place.”
RWE will for the most part be procuring the Siemens 5.X onshore platform which has a flexible rated output of 6.6 to 7.0 MW. The new projects will also utilise the Siemens 4.X platform as part of the agreement, while the contract will include a service agreement for the WTGs that will in due course enable RWE to carry out maintenance and inspections on its own.
There has been co-operation between the two companies for some years, for onshore and offshore WTGs. Earlier this year, RWE selected Siemens Gamesa as the preferred supplier for its 1000 MW Thor wind farm in the Danish North Sea where the two companies have agreed to use the recently-launched Siemens GreenerTower for half of the wind turbines to be installed. And RWE is using recyclable rotor blades from Siemens Gamesa in its German offshore wind farm Kaskasi, and for its largest construction project, Sofia, a 1.4 GW array located on the Dogger Bank in the North Sea.
