The gas line, scheduled for completion in 2009, will carry gas for 210 km on the seabed from the coastal city of Beni Saf in Algeria to the Spanish province of Almeria.
The three RB211-6761 DLE (Dry Low Emissions) units will be installed at the Beni Saf terminal to provide the front-end gas boosting required for the underwater pipeline, which will reach a maximum water depth of over 2,160 m. The pipeline will provide 8bcm of natural gas per year directly to the European market for MEDGAZ, which currently has five partners: Sonatrach (36%), CEPSA (20%), Iberdrola (20%). Endesa (12%), and Gaz de France (12%).
The three compressor packages will delivered in the 4th quarter of 2007 and the 1st quarter of 2008.
The news comes as Enel has announced that it is to source an additional 1 bcm of natural gas from Algeria following the enhancement of the Transmed pipeline which runs from Algerai to Italy via Tunisia.
The supply, which will arrive in Italy in October 2008, will see Sonatrach increase its deliveries to Enel reach 7 bcm and from 2011 Enel will receive a further 2 bcm from the Algerian company through the Algeria-Sardinia-Tuscany GALSI gas pipeline.
