Alstom and Andritz win Bhutan contract

20 August 2009

Bhutan’s Dagachhu Hydro Power Corporation Limited (DHPC) has awarded a consortium of Alstom and Andritz Hydro GmbH a contract to supply key equipment to a new hydropower plant.

Under a contract worth EUR55 million, the Alstom-led consortium – known as Austrian Hydro Consortium Dagachhu – will supply generators, the electrical system, turbines and steelwork to the plant. The project is being financed by Bhutan’s own equity and credit financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Oesterreichische Kontrollbank (OeKB).

The high pressure power station will have a head of 304 m and an installed capacity of 124 MW. Located in the south-western district of Dagana, its development marks a milestone in the development of Bhutan’s hydropower potential, says Alstom.

Alstom Hydro’s scope of supply amounts to EUR30 million and comprises two 70 MVA generators as well as the entire electrical system including control and protection. Andritz Hydro will supply two 6-nozzle Pelton turbines and the entire hydraulic steelwork.

Hydropower generation, and in particular its export to India, is the backbone of Bhutan’s economy, accounting for close to one quarter of the country’s gross national product or approximately 40 per cent of the entire national income. The country has set a target of increasing its installed hydropower generating capacity from 1.5 GW to 10 GW by 2020.
