Brazilian utility Furnas Centrais Elétricas has awarded Alstom a €150 million contract to modernise six generating units with a combined capacity of 1,050 MW at the Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho power plant in Sao Paolo state.

The work will replace equipment installed more than 30 years ago and will see an Alstom-led consortium modernising the six generators, six speed regulation systems, and the digital control and telecommunications systems.

The refurbishment of each generation unit will take around seven months and is due to finish by 2010.

Along with Alstom, consortium members include GE Hydro Inepar do Brasil, Camargo Corrêa Equipamentos e Sistemas, Construções e Comércio Camargo Corrêa, Construtora Norberto Odebrecht , Engevix Engenharia and CNEC Engenharia.

Alstom has also won a €35 million contract to supply electrical and mechanical equipment to the Qiaogong hydro power station in China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region.

The contract with Guangxi Fangyuan Power Co is for the delivery of four 57 MW bulb turbine/generator units and associated accessories. The first unit, which are among the largest in the world, is scheduled for operation in 2008 and the last in 2009.
