JEA, the electricity provider for Jacksonville, Florida, is again considering plans to build a bamboo-fuelled power station. A year ago, JEA signed a contract with Biomass Industries, a company that wants to build the power plant. If built, it will be the largest plant of its kind in the world. Biomass Industries had originally set February 2003 as the date for opening the plant, but this has been pushed back to summer 2004.
In Arizona, APS has opened the first part of the first phase of what will become one of the largest solar power plants in the world. The Prescott plant can now generate 450 kW of solar powered electricity. By March 2003, Phase 1 will be complete with 1.5 MW available. Over the next 3-5 years, APS plans to expand the plant's capacity to 5 MW. The plant will eventually occupy about 50 acres near Prescott Municipal Airport.
