Altitec signs South African JV

3 March 2016

Inspection specialist Altitec has announced a five-year agreement with Obelisk Group to deliver a range of wind turbine blade and tower services to wind farm operators in the South African market.

Altitec and Obelisk, a provider of infrastructure services to the global renewable energy, telecommunications and power markets, will offer services such as rotor-based inspections, composite blade repairs, cleaning and monitoring of equipment and wind turbine tower corrosion protection and repair.

The two firms will also provide training for new rope access technicians in South Africa, Altitec said. The partnership has already set up four dedicated teams of technicians.

According to Altitec, the rapid growth of the wind energy market in South Africa has created demand for repair, inspection and maintenance services, as well as the need for regional expertise that can quickly address blade or tower issues and minimize wind farm down time.

"As key emerging markets move from early stage planning and development and into the commissioning stage, it's critical that prospective wind power projects remain on track and stay within budget," said Tom Dyffort, Managing Director, Altitec.

"However, while the planning theory stacks up, the operational reality of working within new territories can quickly create unforeseen challenges.  Moreover, with many European manufacturers keen to safeguard and protect their equipment during the critical transport and commissioning stage, it's essential that those technicians working with the equipment on the ground can provide absolute confidence and assurance."

According to Altitec, 15 new wind farms totalling 1200 MW have been constructed in South Africa in the last three years. The South African government has already committed to procuring energy from another 19 wind farms totalling 2000 MW, to help combat longstanding electricity shortages.
