SunEdison's 100 MW Amanecer Solar CAP has been inaugurated by Chile's president Michelle Bachelet, becoming the largest solar PV power plant in Latin America
The $250 million Amanecer Solar CAP is located 37km from Copiapo in the Atacama Desert, and comprises 310,000 photovoltaic modules spread over 250 acres.
SunEdison developed the project under an energy purchase agreement with CAP Group, the largest steel producer in Chile.
The project was inaugurated on 6 June following a six-month construction period. It has been connected to the Chilean Central Interconnected System electricity network (SIC), and is expected to generate 270 GWh of clean energy over its first year of operations (the equivalent of 15% of CAP Group's energy demand).
SunEdison says that the project is critical for the future development of renewable energy in Chile and Latin America.
"This plant demonstrates that photovoltaic solar energy is an ideal way of diversifying the energy matrix in Chile, reducing costs and contributing towards meeting the demand for clean and sustainable energy," said Jose Perez, president of SunEdison for Europe, Africa and Latin America.
In addition to the 100 MW Amanecer Solar CAP plant, SunEdison has also connected a 50 MW power plant in San Andres.
