Amazon backs Virginia solar farm

23 June 2015

Amazon has signed an agreement to support the construction and operation of an 80 MW solar farm in the USA as part of its commitment to power all its data centres with renewable energy.

The retail giant is teaming up with Community Energy Inc. to build the photovoltaic facility in the state of Virginia and says that it could start generating electricity by October 2016. The solar farm will be called Amazon Solar Farm US East and the energy it generates will be fed into the grids that supply existing and future Amazon cloud datacentres.

Amazon says that it currently generates around 25 per cent of its data centre energy needs from renewable energy and is aiming to increase this to 40 per cent by the end of 2016. It has signed a power purchase agreement for the Amazon Solar Farm US East that is based on another it signed for energy generated by a planned wind farm in Indiana, USA.

Amazon Solar Farm US East will be the largest solar installation in Virginia.
