Amec Foster Wheeler has been selected to carry out a major study into managing radioactive waste at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site. Its team has the task of identifying practical planning tools to support the future development of a long-term radioactive waste management strategy at the site, and to design case studies to show how the tools can be applied and to run workshops to provide decommissioning staff with practical training.
Kazuyuki Kato, managing director of the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF), which was established by Tepco and the Japanese government in September 2011, described the support from Amec Foster Wheeler as an 'important development.'
The company will provide a specialist project team with experience of providing services to the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority at Sellafield, and to relevant projects in Europe and the USA, Amec Foster Wheeler said.
