Amec FW secures biomass deal

Finnish utility Seinäjoen Energia Oy has awarded Amec Foster Wheeler a contract to supply a biomass dust combustion plant.

The plant will be operated as a back-up for a peak load district heating plant, replacing heavy fuel oil combustion with biomass fuels. It will also increase the plant's capacity to 120 MWth, Amec Foster Wheeler said in a statement.

The installation work will begin during spring 2016 and the plant will be handed over to Seinäjoen Energia Oy for commercial operation in December 2016. It will use wood pellets, wood briquette, bark and forest residue pellets, dried forest residues, agrofuel pellets and peat pellets as fuel, with coal as a back-up fuel.

Amec Foster Wheeler's work scope includes the supply of a new 90 MWth biomass pellet dust boiler with auxiliary equipment, modification of the existing oil fired boiler to 30 MWth wood pellet firing, storage silos and handling equipment for biomass fuels, flue gas cleaning systems, stack, modifications to the boiler house, electrification, instrumentation and automation installed and commissioned.
