American Municipal Power-Ohio (AMP-Ohio) is to develop three run-of-river hydropower plants on the Ohio River and has selected Voith Siemens Hydro as contractor for the complete supply of mechanical, electrical, automation and balance of plant equipment.
The three plants will be developed at existing dam sites and will add 208 MW to AMP-Ohio’s installed capacity when they go on-line in 2012. Voith Siemens’ contract is worth $300 million and the projects represent the company’s largest order from the US in its history.
The project is part of AMP-Ohio’s plans to diversify its generation portfolio.
“We are pursuing an aggressive plan to significantly increase hydro capacity; it is part of an asset-based strategy that includes fossil fuel, hydroelectric and other renewable resources such as wind and landfill gas generation,” said AMP-Ohio President Marc Gerken.
Voith-Siemens will supply a total of eight bulb machines for the projects, which are located in West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky.
