Aneel approves thermal generation in Amazonas and Espirito Santo

Brazilian regulator Aneel has approved construction of thermoelectric power plants in the states of Amazonas and Espirito Santo, at a cost of Rl 435.6 million ($183 million).

Manaus, the capital of the northern Amazonas state, will see the Jaraqui and Tambaqui plants developed with a capacity of 83 MW each which are to be operated by Breitener Energetica. Jaraqui is due to start operation by December 2005 with Tambaqui due by November 2005. Southeastern Espirito Santo state will see the Sol plant developed with a capacity of 196.5 MW, and due to start operation by October 2006.

The plants will operate as independent power producers.
