New Brunswick province, Canada, could be the site of a clean energy park featuring nuclear and renewable energies after its government signed a letter of intent with Areva.
The France-based engineering firm is proposing the construction of a mid-sized generation III+ nuclear plant as well as renewable energy facilities that would supply energy to New Brunswick as well as other Canadian provinces and the USA.
It is the third clean energy park to be proposed by Areva globally and would feature either a 1250 MW Kerena boiling water reactor or a 1100 MW ATMEA1 pressurized water reactor.
New Brunswick currently has one operating nuclear power plant at Point Lepreau, which uses AECL's CANDU-6 technology and which is currently undergoing refurbishment.
“This is an important agreement for Areva as it further validates the relevance of the clean energy park concept to build new CO2-free energy facilities.” said Jacques Besnainou, CEO of Areva Inc. Areva is working on similar clean energy park developments in Ohio, USA with Duke Energy and in California, USA with FNEG.
