Areva's networking pays off

24 January 2008

Areva T&D has secured the second phase of a three part project with UK company Carillion to renew the protection relays within the 25kV overhead line traction system of Network Rail’s East Coast London to Scotland main line. This follows the successful completion of the first phase for which Areva provided the design, installation and commissioning of its MiCOM protection relays.

During the second phase, which is due to be completed by June 2008, Areva will provide protection solutions to the rail infrastructure. The rail catenary MiCOM P438 distance protection device and the backup overcurrent relay MiCOM P120 which will be introduced at feeder stations, will be implemented in 34 substations and some 190 circuits along the route. At applicable substations a combination of MiCOM P921 (VT bays), P141/P142 (incoming Feeder) and P143 (bus-section) relays will also be installed as part of the phase two project works.

Mark Walker, project manager at Carillion Rail Systems commented “We are rapidly approaching the middle of phase two project works and AREVA T&D has successfully met all the necessary critical relay supply requirements. There are many logistical challenges to face, such as limited space for delivery and storage within each substation, and there are also tight time restrictions for Carillion in regard to the installation and testing of the installed equipment.”

The MiCOM P438 and P120 product will provide comprehensive distance protection to Network Rail’s 25kV overhead line traction system and can be customised to comply with Network Rail’s specific requirements. The technology should provide more detailed information about network performance, and a high degree of functionality for alternative setting changes and data analysis.
