Areva targets offshore wind sector

20 August 2009

Areva is to strengthen its presence in the fast-growing offshore wind sector through the acquisition of PN Rotor GmbH, a German manufacturer of high performance rotor blades.

The French engineering firm says that the strategic acquisition of PN Rotor from Prokon Nord Energiesysteme GmbH will help it to secure the supply of a broader range of key components. The company’s current offering to the market is the M5000 offshore wind turbine.

The acquisition will play an important role in helping Areva in its ambition to become a major player in the rapidly-growing offshore wind sector, according to Anil Srivastava, CEO of Areva’s renewables business unit. The company recently signed a binding memorandum of understanding worth more than €700 million to supply 80 M5000 offshore wind turbines for the 400 MW German Global Tech I wind farm in the North Sea.

Areva broke into the offshore wind sector in late 2007 through the acquisition of a 51 per cent stake in Multibrid, a German firm specialising in multi-megawatt offshore wind turbines.

Areva expects to close the acquisition in the next few months.
