8 July 2010

Some 12 companies are to build 32 new renewable energy projects in Argentina after state power company Enarsa announced the winning bidders in the country's Genren tender.

The projects to be constructed include 754 MW of wind energy, 20 MW of solar, 10 MW of mini-hydropower and 110 MW of biomass energy. Enarsa says it received a total of 51 project offers from 21 companies in the tender.

Companies winning projects include IMPSA, Nor Aldyl, Patagonia Wind Energy and Emgasud Renovables. In all, some 9 billion pesos will be invested in the projects.

The Genren programme is designed to diversify Argentina's energy system away from gas while avoiding an increase in carbon emissions. Enarsa launched the tender in May 2009 and will offer power purchase agreements of up to 15 years.

The projects to be developed include 17 wind energy facilities, located predominantly in the south of the country, four biomass projects, five mini-hydro and six solar photovoltaic. Spanish firm Isolux is to build four 50 MW wind farms while Argentina's Emgasud Renovables is building three 50 MW wind farms and one 30 MW wind farm.
