Baltic cable cut

5 April 2002

The 600 MW high voltage direct current connection between Germany and Sweden, the Baltic Cable, was put out of action after being severely damaged on March 16 by the ferry boat Nils Holgerson, which grounded, lightly, just off the German coast near Travemünde. As both the inner conductor and outer sections of the cable were damaged the repair work will probably take several weeks, depending on weather conditions.
