Beacon gets flywheel storage patents

8 February 2005

Beacon Power Corp has been awarded a US patent for a composite flywheel rim with co-mingled fibre layers. The rim is a key component of a flywheel energy storage system that depends on its mass and its ability to spin at high speeds. During 2004, Beacon Power also was granted four other US patents related to flywheel system hardware and electronics which include heat dissipation, high efficiency motors, enhanced bearing tolerance, and an improved flywheel hub. Beacon Power's Smart Energy Matrix is a MW sized flywheel-based energy storage system designed for frequency regulation.
