Bekaert and Toshiba sign PEM electrolysis MoU

17 October 2023

Bekaert and Toshiba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a global partnership around membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis.

Driven by the opportunities arising from the energy transition and decarbonisation trends, Bekaert and Toshiba Corporation’s energy arm, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), are accelerating their growth strategies in renewable energy markets, particularly in green hydrogen production utilising hydrogen production technology with Reduced Iridium developed by Toshiba. The MoU is intended to formalise the two companys’ commitment to developing a partnership by the end of this year.

Bekaert has a leading market position in porous transport layers (PTL), a key component in the MEA of water electrolysers, and has established a global commercial and manufacturing network.

Toshiba ESS is developing membrane electrode assembly for high-performance, large-capacity PEM water electrolysers, employing its iridium-saving technology, which reduces the amount of iridium to one-tenth, while achieving high water electrolysis performance and durability.

The two companies have agreed to study the prospects of a global partnership to jointly develop the production and sales of MEAs by exploiting their technological, manufacturing and commercial network strengths.
