Bharat Heavy ELectricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned the first of three 250 MW coal-fired units at a project in Assam, India.
BHEL is executing the main plant package contract for the Bongaigaon thermal power plant in Kokrajhar district for Indian power company NTPC. Once the project is completed, it will become the highest rating coal-based power plant in northeast India.
The new plant is located near Bongaigaon, an industrial town with a major petrochemical industry. Work started on the project in 2006 and commissioning of the first unit was due to take place in 2011.
The project will use coal from the Makum coal mines of Assam and the Eastern coalfields of West Bengal. Commissioning of the remaining two units is due to take place in 2016 and 2017.
