BP and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding announcing their intention to establish the Clean Energy Commercialisation Centre (CECC) which aims to accelerate the development in China of clean coal technologies.
According to the MoU, CAS and BP will join their efforts to make CECC a profitable world class platform which will identify, evaluate, select, develop and commercialise strategic cleaner coal conversion technologies. It will also integrate individual technologies into commercially viable systems.
Mr Jiang Mianheng, vice president of CAS, said: “China, today, represents the world's second largest energy consumer, and coal accounts for more than 70% of China's total energy consumption. Therefore, cleaner use of energy resources, coal in particular, is critical for the sustainable development of the Chinese economy.”
