Bulgarian nuke set for go-ahead

With massive public support for a second nuclear power plant at Belene, the cabinet decision on the go-ahead due over the coming week is all but certain. Nearly 80% of adult Bulgarians support nuclear generation according to a recent survey from Market Links and almost 70% back proposals for a second nuclear power plant in Belene.

The Belene project is estimated at €2.5 billion – €4.0 billion and the first unit is expected to become operational in 2010 - 2011.

The final go-ahead to the construction of is due this week, according to reported comments from energy minister Miroslav Sevlievski, a draft decision calls for a 2 GW light-water reactor.
