Plans to use wind turbines to generate hydrogen gas are reportedly to be studied by Argentinian energy group Capex over the coming months. Pre-feasibility studies are to be carried out on a project to develop 16,000 MW of wind capacity that will be used to produce 13.3 million cubic meters a year of hydrogen. If developed, the $19 billion project is likely to be located around Pico Truncado in the northeast of Santa Cruz province.
A regional market for the fuel is envisaged, though the project also has the potential to generate tens of millions of carbon credits annually too, but with its $19 billion estimated development cost covering turbines, hydrogen production infrastructure and delivery, Capex would almost certainly form an alliance with other companies should the project proceed to further studies.
