Czech power producer CEZ has bought a further 25 percent of Poland's black-coal fired power plant Elektrocieplownia Elcho, which gives it full ownership. The value of the transaction has not been disclosed.
CEZ acquired a majority stake in Elcho, which produces heat and electricity in two units with total installed capacity of 238 MW, in 2006, and has been active in the Polish market for some time. Besides Elektrocieplownia Elcho it owns close to 100 percent in Elektrownia Skawina, which runs a black-coal fired power plant with an output of 492 MW. However CEZ has announced recently it will not bid in the tender for state-run Polish utility Energa, 83% of which is being sold off by the Polish government. CEZ was shortlisted as a bidder for Energa in early June, together with another Czech company, Energeticky prumyslovy holding (EPH), and three other firms. At present, only EPH and Poland's PGE remain in the bidding.
CEZ has also decided to withdraw from its intention to take part in the privatisation of Polish power plants Pontnow-Adamow-Konin (PAK).
