China plans closure of coal-fired units

2 September 2005

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China has ordered the closure of 64 small coal-fired power plants across the nation within the next five years.

The units have a maximum capacity of 50 MW and account for just over 1% of the national installed capacity. Ten plants are earmarked for closure by the end of this year.

The move has been taken in order to increase generation efficiency and reduce pollution.
