China's National Development Reform Energy Research Institute has released mainland China’s first wind power development plan for 2050.
According to the report’s predictions, total installed capacity from wind power will hit 400 GW by 2030 and 1000 GW by 2050, representing a total investment of 12 trillion yuan ($1.8 trillion).
China wants power generated by wind to supply 17% of domestic demand by 2050. In 2010, the country added nearly 19 GW of new installed capacity, bringing total capacity to 44.7 GW. And according to data from China Renewable Energy Society, the country added more than 6 GW in the first half of 2011, becoming the world largest wind power market.
Since 2006, mainland China has implemented a fixed pricing mechanism for wind power in various regions. It has also offered a subsidy of between 0.01 and 0.03 yuan per kWh for wind power linked to distribution grids.
