Chinese firms win approval for coal plant in Bosnia

30 July 2014

A consortium of Chinese firms is set to build a 450 MW coal-fired power plant in Bosnia after being selected as the preferred bidder for the project.

The consortium, which includes China Gezhouba Group and Guandong Electric Power Design, was the only valid bidder after Hitachi pulled out of the tender process, citing an unfavourable political situation in Bosnia.

The $1 billion project at the Tuzla power plant in northern Bosnia will be one of the largest investments in the country's energy infrastructure. The existing plant consists of six units.

Power utility EPBiH said that it expects to sign contracts with the consortium over the next two months. EPBiH also said that the consortium would contract Alstom and Siemens to provide the equipment for the plant. China's ExIm bank would finance 85 per cent of the project.
