Conergy signs deal for Australia’s largest wind farm

10 January 2008

German renewable energy company Conergy is capitalising on the new Australian government’s pro-environmental policies, in signing a deal to build a 1000 MW wind farm in New South Wales.

The wind farm will be the largest in Australia, and one of the largest in the world, consisting of 400-500 wind turbines and accounting for over four per cent of electricity demand in New South Wales.

Conergy subsidiary Epuron Pty Ltd has signed a joint framework agreement with Macquarie Capital Group to develop, finance and construct the project, which will be located near Silverton, western New South Wales. The project is currently in the planning stage and the two companies plan to start the approval procedure in 2008.

“We are delighted to announce this joint venture,” said Joachim Müller, managing director at Epuron responsible for financing and wind power activities worldwide. “Substantial growth in renewable energy has recently begun to pick up in Australia. Our cooperation with Macquarie Capital puts us in a great position to cover a large part of this increasing demand.”

One of the first acts of Australia’s new Labour government following general elections in December 2007 was to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Australia is committed to a target of generating 20 per cent of electrical power from renewable energy by 2020.

The Silverton wind farm will be situated in Broken Hill, birthplace of Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP), the world’s largest mining company.
