Sumitomo Corporation has selected US engineering firm Black & Veatch to provide equipment and services for the expansion of the Tanjung Jati B power plant in Central Java, Indonesia.
The Japanese firm, which leases the 1320 MW coal fired power plant to Indonesian utility PLN, announced plans to double its capacity in January. Black & Veatch is to provide engineering, procurement and commissioning services for the extension’s boiler island balance of plant.
Other firms participating in the extension project, which will see the construction of two new 660 MW units alongside the plant’s existing two units, are Toshiba, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding. The total cost of the project will be in the region of ¥200 billion, says Sumitomo.
Under its contract with Sumitomo, Black & Veatch will provide equipment for coal handling and unloading, air quality control systems and limestone unloading and handling. The project is scheduled for completion in 2011 and will be equipped with a flue gas desulphurisation system and electrostatic precipitators.
Expansion of Tanjung Jati B will help to strengthen the electric infrastructure and enhance the reliability of power supplies in Indonesia, where electricity demand is growing by seven per cent per year. The two new units will also be leased to PLN, according to Sumitomo.
Project financing is being led by the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) and co-financing lenders, which include Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and BNP Paribas.
