Cummins upgrades its lean burn offering

1 February 2014

Cummins Power Generation has launched a new lean-burn gas generator set product line for the 50 Hz area. It is said to extend the capabilities of the existing QSV91G gas engine based gensets, by offering exceptional transient performance and improved fuel capability, allowing them to run on low methane number fuels down to 43 MN and produce lower NOx emission levels. The product line now includes a new 2 MWe variant, as well as improvements to the 1540 kWe and 1750 kWe models. The entire range of lean burn gas fired gensets now runs from 1250 to 2000 kWe 60Hz, 1540 to 2000 kWe 50Hz, all based on the QSV91G power unit, and 1000 to 1400 kWe 60 Hz, 995 to 1400 kWe, 50 Hz, all based on the QSK60G power unit.

Cummins is aiming at the several mid-range applications for these units - prime power, peaking, and combined heat and power, as well as continuous operation in island mode.

Their robust load handling attributes and capability of running on pipeline and low methane number fuels make them well suited to remote locations where grid power is unavailable, such as mining, oil or gas fields, or in regions of the world where grid power is either unreliable or inaccessible.

NOx emissions ratings can be as low as 250 mg/Nm3 if required. The range retains its ability to run on biogas from landfill, digester and sewage sites.

Enhancements

The new product line (* in the table below) is designed to meet the ISO 8528 G1 standard, which has the effect of delivering improved transient performance with quicker recovery to rated voltage and frequency during start-up and as loads fluctuate. This has been brought about by a complete redesign of the generator sets' turbo layout, utilising technology unique to Cummins.

Black start capability is a major new feature of the line-up. It frees the generator set from grid dependency and allows its deployment anywhere there is a need. The new product line is also capable of running in high altitude and high ambient temperature environments with minimal derate.

Engine

The QSV91G is a heavy duty 4-cycle water cooled V-block, turbocharged low temperature aftercooled engine with a claimed high fuel efficiency and NOx exhaust emissions as low as 250mg/Nm3 (0.5g/hp-hr). Ignition is by individual coil on plug. Full authority electronic engine management is by MCM700/SSM558 with a Woodward PROACT actuator to drive throttle valve and a CENSE engine monitoring system. The PowerCommand 3.3 control is standard equipment and provides total system integration including full paralleling capability in grid or load share mode, precise frequency and voltage regulation, alarm and status message display, AmpSentry™ protection, output metering, auto-shutdown at fault detection and a user interface panel installed onto the genset. Optional remote operator panels are also available.
