Two H class gas turbines, the first consignment of the largest order in Siemens' history, have started their journey to Egypt where they are destined for installation in mid-May at the 4.8 GW Beni Suef combined cycle power plant.
The two 445 tonne SGT5-8000H gas turbines will began their three-month trip at Berlin Westhafen, then via barge, cargo ship to the Port of Adabiya on the Red Sea, and 250 km on a 40-axle trailer, finish it at the Beni Suef construction site situated around 110 km south of Cairo.
A total of eight SGT5-8000H gas turbines will be installed in the plant in several phases. Initially to be operated as a simple cycle gas-fired power plant it will in due course be expanded into a 4.8 MWe combined cycle power plant that will, on completion, be the largest combined cycle plant in the world.
The mega-project that is the planned expansion of Egypt's power generation system includes the construction by Siemens of three natural gas-fired CCGT plants with H-class technology and a total capacity of 14.4 GW. In the process the company will supply a total of 24 H-class GTs, 24 HRSGs, twelve steam turbines and 36 generators. As well as supplying the key components Siemens will also support the three projects with logistics and project the execution.
