Dong firms up on Burbo Bank extension

9 January 2015

Dong Energy says it will go ahead with the construction of a 258 MW offshore wind farm after making a final investment decision.
The Danish firm says that the Burbo Bank Extension project will be commissioned in 2017. The announcement came just days before Dong announced that it had finally divested all of its onshore wind energy projects.
The Burbo Bank Extension will consist of 32 MHI Vestas V164-8.0MW wind turbines, adding to the existing Burbo Bank wind farm located on the Burbo Flats in Liverpool Bay, UK. The project is one of three for which Dong was awarded final investment decision enabling contracts by the UK government in April 2014.
These contracts for difference will provide Dong with a fixed price per MWh of electricity produced for 15 years.
Samuel Leopold, executive vice president of Dong said that the decision to use 8 MW turbines for the project represented "another significant step towards reducing [the] cost of electricity on future projects".
