Dong will build Borkum Riffgrund 2

1 July 2016

Dong Energy is to go ahead with the construction of the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm, it has announced.

The Danish firm said that the 450 MW wind farm will be fully commissioned in the first half of 2019, bringing the firm's installed offshore wind capacity to 6.7 GW.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 will be built in waters 54 km off the coast of Lower Saxony, Germany, and will feature the largest wind turbines installed in German waters. Dong is currently the project's sole owner and plans to divest up to 50 per cent of the project "at a later stage".

"Offshore wind is a significant contribution to the German energy transition, and Borkum Riffgrund 2 confirms Dong Energy's position as one of the major investors in the renewable energy infrastructure in Germany," said Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President and Head of Wind Power at Dong. "The 8 MW turbine takes offshore wind efficiency a further step forward, and the size of the Borkum Riffgrund 2 project is yet another indication of market maturity.

"We'll continue our relentless efforts to drive down the cost of electricity from offshore wind."
