The project, which will improve the overall efficiency of the plant taking it close to 40%, is part of the company’s commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5%.
Siemens, which supplied the existing turbines, is to commence the bulk of the four year project work in 2008 but some early work will begin during the second of the 2007 planned outages.
The implementation of proposed changes to the co-firing regulations under the government’s Renewables Obligation will make it possible for Drax to co-fire up to 10% from renewable sources by the end of 2009 and combined with the turbine upgrade, Drax is set to reduce its annual emissions by 15% by 2011. The plant produces 7% of the UK’s capacity.
